On Wednesday, April 25th, the Maritime Academy Charter School (MACHS) hosted two Career Day assemblies with the Women’s International Trade Association (WITA). Following a tour of the beautiful MACHS campus in the Arsenal Business Center complex, WITA spoke to 10th and 12th graders about their mission to Raise Awareness, Inform and Educate, and to Promote the Exchange of Ideas as well as the wealth of opportunities available in the Maritime, Shipping, Transportation, Trade and Logistics fields. Each participating member then gave a description of how they got into the industry, their company and their job responsibilities. A wonderful and educational day was had by all!

WITA wishes to thank MACHS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ann G. Waiters, Principal Edward Poznek, Director of Operations Kyle Orosz, MACHS Board Member Eugene Mattioni, Esq. and the MACHS teachers, staff and students for hosting them and for helping them to give their idea of a Career Day a place to become a reality. WITA would also like to thank their employers for supporting them in this project. This was a perfect way for WITA to give back to the local maritime community and WITA is looking forward to a continued relationship and future activities with the Maritime Academy Charter School.

If you are interested in partnering with the Women’s International Trade Association for similar events or other projects, please contact them at WITA1979Philly@gmail.com.

Southport, the subject of this event’s remarks by Philadelphia Regional Port Authority Senior Deputy Executive Director Robert C. Blackburn, will be the first major marine terminal constructed at the Port of Philadelphia in more than forty years.  Poised to coincide with the deepening of the Delaware River’s main channel from forty to forty-five feet and the expansion of the Panama Canal, Southport will permit the Port of Philadelphia to efficiently handle the newer, larger containerships that a deeper Delaware River and a deeper, wider Panama Canal will bring to our region.

In a series of strategic moves- guided by a detailed plan developed by PRPA staff and fueled by strong bi-partisan support in the state capital- PRPA in recent years began assembling the required acreage for Southport.  This was followed by an RFP process to identify the appropriate private business entities to partner with PRPA and the Commonwealth in the construction and operation of the new facility.  Mr. Blackburn’s remarks will describe the challenges and often fascinating details of both the land acquisition and business partnering phases of the Southport project, as well as the reasons why Southport, along with the Delaware River Main Channel Deepening project, will be one of the most important developments to occur at the Port of Philadelphia in generations.

Mr. Blackburn has been at the center of the Southport development project since its evolution from an idealistic concept on the drawing board more than ten years ago to its conversion to a serious business initiative shortly after that.  With pre-construction phases of the project now underway, actual construction of Southport will begin in 2013.  Working closely with the PRPA Board of Directors, the staff of the PRPA, under the leadership of Executive Director, James T. McDermott, Jr., and Mr. Blackburn, have undertaken and successfully completed other significant initiatives in recent years that have included the attraction of major Hyundai and Kia automobile cargoes to the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal and Pier 98 Annex in South Philadelphia and the establishment of the new Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market in Southwest Philadelphia, PRPA’s first major non-maritime facility.

Biography of  Robert C. Blackburn

Mr. Blackburn was born March 12, 1961.  He attended Saint John Neumann High School and LaSalle University graduating with a B.S. Degree in 1983.  Mr. Blackburn began his career in the Port of Philadelphia working as a Chilean fruit importer until joining the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority as a Marketing Representative in 1992.  Mr. Blackburn has held various positions at the Authority including Director of Marketing, Deputy Executive Director and his current position as Senior Deputy Executive Director.  He has served as president of the Whitman Council Neighborhood Advisory Corporation and the Chilean and American Chamber of Commerce where he is currently a board member.  Mr. Blackburn also serves as a director for the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay and is a member of numerous trade organizations.  He is a lifelong resident of South Philadelphia where he lives with his wife, Donna, and his son, Robert.

Happy Spring Everyone!

On April 12th, 2012, the Women’s International Trade Association will be hosting Robert C. Blackburn, the Senior Deputy Executive Director of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority, at the Waterfall Room in Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Blackburn will be discussing the development of the Southport Marine Terminal. Please RSVP no later than April 3rd, 2012.

Please see the attached invitation for complete details.
